The most obvious reason to purchase a reconditioned over a brand new machine always breaks to; how much money can ya save and is the machine still reliable to justify the savings?
As far as function, they both blend the same. If you are worried about appearance, then a reconditioned may come with a few scratches. My 3 sisters all have reconditioned machines and these machines were given to them as gifts for Christmas. Nothing noticeable with their appearance, no major scratches or etc. The containers came brand new, the tamper and recipe guides were all there.
The biggest difference of WHAT YOU DON'T GET is the 7 year warranty. You receive 2 less years on the warranty. However, extended warranty is available for purchase. So if this really bugs you, you'll get 3 extra years for $75. If you get a Recon for $279 + 75, that's 359 and not only do you receive 8 year warranty, but you save almost $100 in the process.
Machines off of amazon are certified reconditions when noted, meaning Vitamix has picked through them. One of the best parts of all the warranties is they pay for shipping both ways. So in case something does happen, at least you're not stuck with $40 of shipping bills just to get it to perform.
My recommendation; If the reconditioned unit is $279.00 or $299.00 with free shipping, and I were buying for myself, I'd choose a reconditioned over a brand new. My preferable choice over all would be; choose a reconditioned, skip the extended warranty, and even skip the 2nd container. Once you find you enjoy the machine, use some of those savings down the road on your 2nd container. You will find at some point, utilizing a shorter 48oz container is nice to have around and fits under the standard cupboard.

FAQ
If Vitamix is so reliable, why are there reconditions even available?
We must keep in mind Vitamix has been around for darn near a century! Not only that, they sell millions of dollars of machines each month! Nothing is ever perfect, not even my iPhone which costed me a lot more and my last 2 models both needed to be replaced. Some machines may be demo machines, some returns, some that actually didn't work, etc. No matter the reason, they back they're product by a VERY LONG FULL warranty, covering shipping both ways! You can't ask for much more! That is a wonderful peace of mind no matter what you choose!
